ESSAY 2001-2002

Required

1. Which of Kenan-Flagler’s Core Values — excellence, leadership, integrity, community, or teamwork — has been most important for your career development to date? How do you expect this value to figure in your future development? (answer must be no more than 2 typed pages, double spaced)

2. What is it about your background and your experiences that would make a contribution to the diversity of the entering class and the educational experience of the other students? (answer must be no more than 2 typed pages, double spaced)

3. You are the senior marketing officer at Levi Strauss Corporation, a manufacturer of casual apparel. Nike Corporation has proposed an alliance in which your two companies will introduce a co-branded line of sports apparel in Europe. You are responsible for evaluating the pros and cons of this potential alliance and for recommending a course of action to the CEO. You have two weeks to respond to Nike. What factors will you consider? What resources will you use? How will you present the analysis? What action will you recommend? (answer must be no more than 3 typed pages, double spaced)

ESSAY 2002-2003

1. Please describe your career progression to date, highlighting leadership and management positions and reasons for changing employers or career paths, if applicable. How will an MBA assist you in achieving your short- and long-term career goals? (answer must be no more than 2 typed pages, double spaced)

2. Describe your three greatest accomplishments. What does each demonstrate about your personality? (answer must be no more than 2 typed pages, double spaced)

Please answer of the following two questions:

3. You are a senior vice president of a chain of restaurants based in your home country. You have been asked to evaluate the feasibility of expanding the chain worldwide. How would you conduct an analysis that would enable you to make a recommendation? Please take the perspective of either Senior VP of Strategy, Marketing or Operations. (answer must be no more than 2 typed pages, double spaced)

4. You have recently been brought in by the CEO of your company to act as the new project lead for a high profile team charged with bringing a new product to market. The team has become dysfunctional and risks missing the project deadline. How will you go about turning the situation around? You have one month to make the deadline. (answer must be no more than 2 typed pages, double spaced)

1. Please tell us about any international experience you have had, either living or working abroad, and how it has impacted your global perspective. (one page maximum)

2. What obstacles or major challenges have you overcome to achieve your goals? How do these life experiences distinguish you from other applicants? (one page maximum)

3. Kenan-Flagler students have chosen to concentrate in a variety of fields as undergraduate students and we welcome applications from students who have majored in non-business fields. To prepare for the quantitative dimension of the MBA program,we strongly recommend that all enrolling students have some background in Calculus, Economics, Statistics and Financial Accounting. If you haven’t studied these subjects in college or university, please explain how you have demonstrated proficiency in these areas. If you haven’t had exposure to these subjects, please let us know your plan for preparing yourself for Kenan-Flagler. (one page maximum)
