University of Maryland Business School MBA Essay Questions, Topics and Sample Essay Response

ESSAY 2001-2002

1. Why are you pursuing a graduate business degree? (Limit 1 page/250 words.)

2. What are your career goals (immediately after graduation, 5 years out, 10 years out)? Be your own career counselor. What aspects of your personality or background do you believe present the greatest obstacles to achieving those goals? What is your strategy for overcoming these obstacles? (Limit 2 pages/500 words.)

3. Imagine that during business school orientation, you are assigned to a three-person team. This is the team you will work with on projects and assignments throughout the first semester. If you had the opportunity to select one (and only one) person to be on this team with you, whom would you select and why? This person may be living or deceased. (Limit 1 page/250 words)

4. (Optional) Is there any additional information or explanations that would assist the Admissions Committee in evaluating your candidacy (for example, if your grade point average is less than 3.0)? (Limit 1 page.)

5. (Optional) If your credentials and application represent you adequately, do not feel obligated to write anything more.

 

ESSAY 2002-2003

1. Please discuss your short-term and long-term career goals. How will your academic background and prior work history, coupled with a Smith MBA or MS degree aid you in achieving those goals? Please limit response to two pages.

2. If you could turn back time, what would be the one thing in your life that you would do over, and why? Please limit responses to one page.

3. What is the most valuable lesson you have learned, and who was responsible for teaching it? Please limit response to one page.

4. Imagine that you will be taking a 72 hour car-ride with two other individuals. If you could choose your travel companions, who would you choose and why. (These individuals can be living or deceased.) Please limit responses to one page.

5. (Optional) Please use this essay to provide the admissions committee with additional information that will assist us in evaluating your candidacy (for example, an explanation for gaps in employment history or an undergraduate grade point average that is less than 3.0).
