Boston University Business School MBA Essay Questions, Topics and Sample Essay Response

ESSAY 2001-2002

Please limit your answers to two pages for each question. Applicants to the MS•MBA program should answer questions 1–3. Applicants to the MBA or MSIS program should answer questions 2–4. Applicants to the MSIM program should answer questions 4 and 5 only. Question 6 is optional for all applicants.

1. Given the rigors of the MS•MBA program, describe your motivation for taking on this academic challenge and explain why you think the MS•MBA preparation will be of special value in your professional life.

2. Describe a situation in which you demonstrated leadership. What motivated you? What challenged you? What was the outcome and why?

3. Boston University seeks a diverse entering class, rich with students of unique talents and experiences. Describe how your personal distinctiveness will contribute to a stronger learning environment at Boston University and will serve to further your success as a manager.

4. Why is an MBA, MSIS, or MSIM the next natural step in your career advancement? Why is this the right time for you to pursue graduate management education? Please mention your career goals in your response.

5. Describe an important work-related problem, the resolution of which highlights your problem-solving and analytical skills. Outline your analysis and strategy for dealing with this issue and comment on their effectiveness.

6. (Optional) What will be the Admissions Committee’s chief concern in evaluating your potential for success at Boston University? Please explain why this concern might be unfounded or not important.
