The celebration of flag day was constituted as a symbolic element of the construction of brazilian national identity, the day of the flag symbolizes the brazilian nation.
On day 19 of November celebrates the Day of flag of Brazil , this celebration became part of the history of the country after the proclamation of the Republic in 1889. With the end of the Imperial period (1822-1889), the flag drawn by Jean Baptiste Debret, which represented the Empire, was replaced by Decio Vilares design.
The replacement of the imperial flag by a Republican flag represents the changes that Brazil was going on at that decor: changes in the shape of Government and rule, the imperial regime for a Federal Republic. In addition, the new flag represented the symbolism that was added to republicanism, as the idea of a nation State, patriotism and the rise of nationalist sentiment, that is, the identity of the Brazilian people, building national identity.
The flags are not restricted to be only symbologies of the nation State, or of any country, but there are flags that represent various regions of the country and different institutions and social spheres. There are flags that symbolize football teams, cheerleaders, cities, States, governmental and religious institutions like cities, army, in addition to the commercial institutions, a company flag.
We have news that the first flags were displayed in antiquity, were used in the armies as a means of recognition between the different soldiers. Currently, in the contemporary world, every nation State has a national flag that represents and gives unity to the nation, i.e. unifies different peoples. In this way, the institution of the celebration of the day of the flag added another symbolic element in the construction of national identity.
