Monongalia County
Formed in 1776 from West Augusta. Named for the Monongahela
River. Monongalia is claimed by some to be a Latinized form of
Monongahela. Others explain the county name as either an error
that occurred in Richmond, or as possibly the true form of the
Indian term for this river, since it is not known exactly how
the Indians pronounced its name. The term means either the
"river with the slippery banks" or the "river with the slipping
banks."
