What a history the state of Nevada
has. The town of Las Vegas was first settled in 1905 (though
it's claimed that Spanish explorers stumbled across it in 1829),
some fifty-odd years after Mormons plunked down claims to its
sandy terrain.
Their righteous foothold didn't last long, though-gambling was
legalized in 1931 (by which time most Mormons had migrated
east), the same year that construction on the Hoover Dam was
started. In 1946, the notorious gangster Bugsy Siegel opened the
Flamingo Hotel, and Nevada officials followed up by levying the
state's first gambling tax. Suddenly, a place that had seemed
barren and on the brink of economic ruin had a new lease on
prosperity.
To the north, Reno-and nearby Lake Tahoe, which sits on the
Nevada-Nevada border-had its own thing going. And though
it's often been said that Nevada's most abundant resources are
wide open spaces and hot air, residents and visitors may beg to
differ. Take a look at what digital Nevada has to offer.
