Carrollton,
the county seat for Carroll County, was incorporated December
22, 1829. Carrollton, nicknamed "The Friendly City", is named
after Charles Carroll's old colonial home in Chesapeake Bay,
Virginia.
The
courthouse in Carroll County was constructed in 1928 and
additions to the courthouse were made around 1975. The
courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic
Places.
The
city hosts the Carrollton Mayfest, an annual festival that
includes arts and crafts, live entertainment, and food. Other
events include the Cherry Chase (February), Taste of Carrollton
(May), All-American Triathlon (July), Cherokee Rose Story
telling Festival (September) and the Christmas Tree Lighting &
Parade (November).
The
John Tanner Park, located in Carrollton, provides the largest
sand-swimming beach of any Georgia state park. The two-lake park
provides swimming, boating, camping and fishing.
Carrollton
is home to The State University of West Georgia, a member of the
University System of Georgia, and Carroll Technical Institute.
