Athens is located at 105km east of Atlanta. It
has been the home of the University of Georgia, the first
land-grant university in the U.S., since the school was
chartered in 1785. The campus includes Sanford Stadium, where
UGA fans cheer for the Georgia Bulldogs football team, which is
spelled AND pronounced "DAWGS." The town of Washington boasts
more than 100 colonial, antebellum and Victorian buildings.
Notable is the restored home of Robert Toombs, a recalcitrant
politician who hated the Union for political reasons and hated
the Confederacy almost as much because it did not elect him its
president. 216 East Robert Toombs Ave. Washington is 73km
southeast of Athens.
