Little Rock Arkansas
|
Arkansas' capital city got a lot of attention in 1957,
when federal troops were sent in to enforce a Supreme
Court decision against , partition in public schools. It
has a calmer atmosphere these days, but a new museum
allows visitors to examine that tumultuous event. North
Little Rock sits directly across the Arkansas River from
Little Rock. It's known for its Old Mill, a building
that appeared in the movie Gone With the Wind. Toltec
Mounds State Park, about 32km southeast of Little Rock,
containes one of the largest ceremonial-mound sites in
the lower Mississippi Valley.
Attractions in Little Rock include the State Capitol,
inaugurated in 1911; the Governor’s Mansion; Quapaw
Quarter, a district of restored buildings that includes
the Old State House; the Arkansas Territorial
Restoration, a group of restored homes dating from the
early 19th century; and MacArthur Park, containing the
Arkansas Arts Center, the Museum of Science and History,
and the birthplace of General Douglas MacArthur. A
leading annual event is Riverfest, held Memorial Day
weekend.
